Tax Assistance 2021

Due to the COVID-19 virus, AARP announced there will be no in-person tax assistance this year. All New Jersey VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Centers and all TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) Centers are currently closed.

Tax filing dates have been extended for Federal and New Jersey State taxes until May 17, 2021 to assist you in obtaining tax assistance and filing.

Here are some options for tax assistance:

  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide: Online Tax Preparation with AARP volunteers.
  • Click here to access their website:
  • Phone number: 1-888-687-2277 or 887-434-7598.
  • Email:

Taxpayers can interact with Tax-Aide counselors online and by phone as well as submit documents electronically for assistance.  For those filing their own taxes, Tax-Aide gives taxpayers free access to software to prepare their own taxes.  Help is available from counselors via computer screen-sharing.

Qualified households for free tax preparation: Households with annual incomes of $57,000 or less, OR individuals with incomes of $35,000 or less. Due to the need for COVID-19 precautions, all assistance is by appointment only this year. Call or visit their website for assistance.

If you have a computer, internet connection and computer skills (or someone at home who can help), you can file using IRS Free File.  Find what you need to get started, get the available forms and learn more about IRS Free File on the website.

Federal 1040 Forms and instructions are available for free at the library. All other forms are available to print from the IRS website at, and library staff is available to assist in printing those forms as well.
