Director & Senator - National Library Week 2014.jpg

Middletown Township Public Library is celebrating National Library Week, April 13-19. On April 16, we were fortunate enough to have a special visitor, Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, N.J. State Senate, 13th Legislative District. After reading a story to children and their parents at our Mother Goose program, Senator Kyrillos was given a guided tour by Middletown Library Director, Kim Rinaldi. Here’s what he had to say about the value of libraries.

“Libraries are not just centers for information and education. They are also a community gathering place. I’m grateful to promote libraries during National Library Week. I want to encourage residents to check out their local libraries to see all that they have to offer. “

Those of you who enjoy the library’s ebook collection can rejoice – sort of.  One of the large publishers, Hachette, which has the Little Brown and Grand Central lines, is now going to sell its books to libraries in the ebook format.  Its entire catalog of 5,000 titles will be available for purchase, but here’s the catch.  New releases will be sold at three times the retail price of the hardcover book, a license good for one year.  300% MORE THAN THE BOOK!!!! – then, after one year, the price will drop to the bargain basement price of one and a half times the book cost.   This business model will also mean that we will have to purchase one volume for each reader- no simultaneous borrowing by several readers at a time.

What a rip-off to public libraries.

Hachette’s bestselling authors include David Baldacci, Sandra Brown, Stephen Colbert, Chris Colfer, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, Nelson DeMille, Tina Fey, Malcolm Gladwell, Chelsea Handler, Harper Lee, John Maxwell, Brad Meltzer, Joyce Meyer, Stephenie Meyer, Joel Osteen, James Patterson, Jerry Pinkney, Keith Richards, JK Rowling, J.D. Salinger, David Sedaris, Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler, Nicholas Sparks, Jon Stewart, David Foster Wallace, Brent Weeks, and Tom Wolfe.

If you wonder why your favorite author isn’t listed in MTPL’s ebook collection, the exorbitant price just might be the reason.

Come to think of it – this deal does not even qualify as “sort of” good news!  Let me know what you think about this price gouging!
